This book is an excellent source of information about the past history of the Ku Klux Klan. The author explains the three active phases of the Klan and the amplifies the activities of the Klan during those periods. As the title suggests, the emphasis in on the middle period. At it's beginning, the Klan stressed "Americanism" which was really a racially and religiously oriented hate movement. At it's height, the political influence of the Klan might have exceeded their own expectations.
The author provides consideral documentation to permit further study by the reader. I particulary liked the approach of showing how specific city activities furthered the Klan cause. I certainly understand the Klan better now after reading this book.
