I had read this book in French when it first came out. It is one of my favourite books ever. I bought it in English translation for my husband who usually only likes non-fiction, and he has been mesmerised. You are completely plunged into 17th century France. The writing is lovely, there is not one false note. The life of Madame de Maintenon is intrinsically interesting and the author does it full justice.
