In 1605 King James I gather scholars from all over England who are set with one task, translating the Bible into English and diluting the power of the Catholic church but just as work starts, a scholar is brutally murdered at one of the locations and Deacon Marbury who is in charge of this group brings in an outsider to help discover the killer but Brother Timon as he calls himself is not who he says he is. He is actually an assassin sent by Pope Clement to sabotage the work. Other scholars die and yet Brother Timon is not the one killing them and when one of the scholars finds some texts that change the Bible completely and may turn Christianity on it's ear. The Deacon's daughter gets involved. There are other forces including the King who seems to be focused on a book he wrote on Demons, the Pope's agents who Brother Timon is reporting to, another assassin and Deacon Marbury, who realizes that the king is insane and no help will come from him. Brother Timon whose job was to memorize the entire work of the scholars is having a change of heart. He likes Deacon Marbury and his daughter and he's afraid if he doesn't find the killer, they may be next on the list. This historical mystery might be of interest to those who are interested in knowing how the first translation of the Bible came about. Christianity is still a bloody religion. This was a great read DePoy really did his research.
