Excerpt from The Just and the Unjust, Vol. 1 of 2 Four years had elapsed since Edward Lester's death, and still Hugh showed no signs of marrying, and Lord Heversham already saw visions of the dis reputable cousin reigning at Heversham and the Brompton Road lady, bedecked with the Lester family jewels, Sitting in the place of his childless wife. The thinning of a plantation, or the renova tion of a fence, would invariably serve as an object lesson, and Lord Heversham would remark with a sigh on the utter futility of improving a place which in a few years' time must pass out of the family for he refused to recognise the far-ofi' cousin as a Lester.
