The Jews having been put to shame in the matter relating to the adulteress, by whom they hoped to entangle the Lord (6), did not renew the attack till nightfall.--Cf. 12 and 20 vs. We resume the narrative at chapter 8, verse 12, when Jesus came down into the " Court of the Women." Here was the treasury (20), the same apartment where the " widow cast in her mite," showing that it was the women's court where Jesus now was (8: 12). Here He found the lights brilliantly burning, as on the previous night, and as the priests came down the steps, with "flourishes," followed by the Levites and the multitude, toward the lower gate, the " Beautiful Gate," Jesus stood up and cried, in a loud voice--"I Am The Light Of The World! He who followeth after me, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of Life." "Light" is the name of Messiah--Talmud. This was a plain, open avowal of His Messiahship. The Jews (13) could no longer keep silent, and there followed a long war of words, in which Jesus came off conqueror (20). "These words," from v. 12 to 20, "Jesus spake in the treasury," as the people rejoiced in song and dance before the lights. Necessarily there was a suspension of festivities while Jesus and the Pharisees (13) held controversy, after which the people all passed out at the Beautiful Gate.--Lightfoot. Thus ended Jesus' second day in the temple, which was the sixth of the feast. The next day was yet more perilous.
