Leland was a chaplain to Henry VIII, and was entrusted by the King to examine and use the libraries of all the religious houses in England, before their eventual dissolution. After that, he obtained permission to use the library belonging to the inoperative monastery of Bury St Edmunds. It was these manuscripts, alongside his own travels, that sparked his long passion for English and Welsh topography. He had a patriotic passion to see the places that he had read about in ancient histories and manuscripts. After 1538, he spent the next six years on a series of journeys. It was his idea to see every haven, river, lake, mountain, valley, forest, city, boroughs, castle, manor house, monastery, and college that he possibly could in Britain. Though there is no definitive chronology of Leland's journeys, we know that he travelled all around the country, from the West Country, to Wales, to the North West, to the West Midlands, to the North East, and to the South East. Over these extensive travels, Leland kept many notebooks, noting information from his own observations, as well as information from books, charters, and from word of mouth. It also appears that some of his notebooks have been lost. Later editions contained further rough notes and early drafts, though those were not included in editions until the eighteenth century. 'The Itinerary of John Leland the Antiquary' is a unique collection of observations, and has proven to be an invaluable reference work for subsequent antiquaries looking into the local history of England. Edited by Thomas Hearne, a diarist and prolific antiquary. He is best known for being the editor of many important English chronicles, including works by William Camden and Sir John Spelman. He worked as the second keeper of the Bodleian Library, where he catalogued the books. However, as he didn't take an oath of allegiance to King George I, his librianship was taken from him. From thence forth, he continued his editing work. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Charles Barclay'. The third edition of this important topographical work. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to the spines, resulting in some loss. Light loss to the head and tail of the spines. Minor bumping to the extremities. Light rubbing to the joints. Small crack to the tail of the rear joint of Volume I. Crack to the front joint of Volume II. Cracks to the joints of Volumes III and IV. Front joint of Volume V is starting. Hinges of Volumes I, II are starting but firm. Hinges of Volume III strained but remain firm, resulting in the front endpaper working loose. Hinges of Volume IV are strained but remain firm. Front hinge of Volume V is strained but remains firm. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spots. Very Good.
