I came into this book having a fairly detailed knowledge of the Great Irish Famine, having taken a class from Irish scholar Kevin Whelan, and some knowledge of the Victorian era in England, but with little understanding of the events leading to Irish independence. With Kavanagh's intimate personal research and sweeping historical vision, both beautifully exposited, I feel a new familiarity with this turbulent era on both historical and personal levels. Features that recommend this book include: Kavanagh carefully sculpts the characters whose actions drove these events with honesty and balance, seeking neither to canonize saints nor to condemn sinners but peering past deeds into motivations without drawing poor moral equivalences or failing to condemn wrong actions; she also draws in 'side' characters to the central drama to give her narrative enhanced and rewarding breadth; and, finally, her writing is crisp and sparkling, and she rarely tips her hand as the sprawling narrative patiently and satisfyingly coheres into a singular, multifaceted mystery-adventure-- this book would be a great read even if the story were complete fiction. Her graceful acknowledgments of when the historical data cannot answer piercing questions are done so as to charge the imagination (in addition to being responsible academic restraint). My only problem with the book is that the wide cast of characters can be confusing at times for its scope; a character guide page would have been helpful. That said, those who put down this book because of the sometimes overwhelming cast of flesh-and-blood real people are depriving themselves of a fascinating and human drama. I loved this book!
