Excerpt from The Interpretation of the Character of Christ to Non-Christian Races: An Apology for Christian Missions The chapters on the ideals of the four chief non-christian religions will suggest to some of their readers the criticism that the writer has failed to point out how greatly the adherents of these religions fall short of their own ideals. This failure is not the result of ignorance. He has seen fakirs and other holy men in India whom he would not dare to compare in holiness or in spiritual discernment with the cannibals whom he has met in Central Africa; he has stayed with Mohammedan slave raiders whose religion was unworthy to rank with that of their pagan slaves lastly, he has met nominal Chris tians in West Africa and elsewhere whose ideals of life and conduct would compare unfavourably not only with those of the adherents of non Christian religions but with those of many hea then. But although, even within the limits of his own experience, the profession and practice of religion, whether Christian or non-christian, have proved to be widely separated, he feels that to attain a true conception of any religion we must judge it not by its unfaithful and inconsis tent, but by its faithful and consistent followers.
