The occupants Of the house had just done dining; they were at dessert. The host leaned back in his chair and tasted his wine his wife rested her round white arms on the table-cloth, and tried, not very successfully, to peel some early walnuts; their guest sat in a reverie, absently fingering the stem of his wine glass. Outside, there sounded distinctly the patter Of hurrying feet on the asphalte parade; laughter and voices also were tossed in at the window in snatches; the low murmur of the sea was soothingly audible.
