Fascinating family history
This is one of the most intriguing biographies I've ever read. The Wittgensteins were an extraordinary family - eccentric, artistic, neurotic, tragic - who both shaped and reflected the history of late 19th/early 20th century Viennese history.
The book is beautifully written, filled with insightful analysis, and colored by a wealth of personal and professional anecdotes about the individual family members. It explores the dynamic between their many conflicting personalities, as well as broadening their stories to include their interaction with the luminaries of their day: Scientists, musicians, painters, industrialists, politicians - the list is a veritable who's who of that period.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in turn-of-the-century Europe, whether from a political or cultural standpoint, but also to anyone who's drawn to family history and conflict.
