His dad has invited him back to Ngonyama, near Nelspruit, for the spring break in September, and although his mom is against the trip, he goes to spend two weeks working at his dad's wildlife veterinary practice. He reconnects with his childhood friend Siyabelo, his sangoma mentor Kubukele, and of course Samantha, the beautiful girl who has stolen his heart. Working with Kubukele he discovers that he possesses new powers, and with training and practice he attempts to become proficient in using them. There are poachers active in the area. They have been killing rhino and hacking the horns off. They have roamed the area for over a year now and their modus operandi indicates that the same group has now shot and killed dozens of rhinos.
