Makes one wonder WHY Kostner and the filmmakers of "Dances With Wolves" (based on Blake's novel to which this is the sequel) changed the tribe portrayed in the story. Not Lakota! Guess what! They're Comanche! Excellent writing!

Tells a sad tale.
Although I didn't read Dances with Wolves I did see the movie~ and in the movie I was disappointed that we never really knew what happened to the tribe and Dances with Wolves and Stands with Fist- This starts 11 years after the end of DWW. The times of a free Indian were rapidly coming to an end and Ten bears Village is caught in the ensuing cross fire with far reaching and tragic results. Stands with fist along with her youngest daughter are taken by a band of renegade white men during an attack on Ten Bears Village when they realize that she is a white woman. Then realize that she is Christine Gunther the girl who was "taken" by Indians many years ago and a little girl. Now they feel that they must "save" her from a terrible life that they assume that she must have been living all of these years. They return her to what is left of her family and of course she does not take this very well and all are soon unhappy with the situation. Meanwhile DWW who was away with a hunting party along with his 2 older children at the time of the massacre and abduction of his wife and daughter is determined to get his family back embarks on a quest to find her along with his 2 older children who sneak away to go with him. He of course finds and rescues her from her captors. All along the Tribe is being forced to move to a reservation and resist causing tragic results. This is a sad but accurate tale about the fate of the Native Americans at the Hands of this county. It is a haunting book and even though it does bring some closure to DWW the ending although true to history, leaves one feeling deeply sadden and somewhat empty. This book is less about DWW and more about the consequence's of Westward expansion and its effects on the Ten Bears Village the Comanche, Kiowa and Cheyenne. It is a must read for all those who enjoyed DWW.
