In 2007, Dr Siro Trevisanato, an Italian molecular biochemist, claimed that the Hittites had used germ warfare by dispatching infected sheep to cities they were intent on conquering. Dr Trevisanato said: "There is no doubt that these were the first weapons of mass destruction. They were waging bioterrorism."
A mysterious 'Plague' is recorded in 1325 BC when the Hittites plundered Symra, the Phoenician city on the Lebanese-Syrian border. According to the professor, the modus operandi was straightforward. The Hittites left the infected sheep outside the city they planned to conquer. They would be taken into the city by the locals who would eat or breed these, thus spreading the disease.
The empire of the Hittites of Anatolia covered Northern Turkey and stretched into Iraq and Syria. The Book of Genesis says they were the descendants of Ham through his son called Canaan. The Bible acknowledges them as a powerful people who lived 'in the mountains'. In Babylon, they destroyed the dynasty of Hammurabi, a great man of the times. The Hittites are also famous for their lethal chariots and for their legendary skill with horses.
Thirty years before Dr Trevisanato came to his conclusions, Dr Johannes Lehmann published 'The Hittites' and the opening lines of the Introduction to his book are enough to whet the appetite of anyone interested in knowing more about this formidable race. He says:
"This is the story of a people wrapped in oblivion for 3000 years. Although they once conquered Babylon and put the Pharaoh Rameses to flight, nothing was known about them until a century ago, except their name, Our great-grandfathers had no precise idea where they lived and where their capital city laid buried."
A lot more light has been shed on the Hittites since this book was first published but it remains a brilliant introduction to their civilisation. Additionally, Dr Lehmann's writing style is eminently readable and should appeal to the layman as well as anyone seriously probing this period of history. This scholarly account is fascinating, informative and a delight to read.
