As the Lutherans, no less than the Catholics, abominated these Horn. xi. 29. f Ch. viii. coac. part i. p. 66. J Ib. cone, part ii. p. 121. dogmas, and the writings of the first were read with a more favorable prevention by the Calvinists, the horror of these sentiments, unheard of till Calvin's days, spread itself by little and little among the Calvinian churches. Men began to awake, and perceive how horrible it was, that a true believer could not fear for his salvation in contradiction to this precept of the apostle: " work out your own salvation with fear and trembling."
