But the Sumatrans were no longer obvious to Impressions which had proved the Bane of Felicity. They were convinced by the Avowal of Fraud and Prophaneness, which they had so long and so openly professed, that the Cause of God could find no Friend in Demagogian Breasts; that neither Constitution nor Trade could ever be the Care of Men who had infracted the most essential Articles of both, and loaded them and their Manufactures with Taxes and Oppression. They tasted the Return of Happiness in the paternal Care of Amurath, with too exquisite Sensibility to listen to the lying Lips of those whose whole Conduct had proved them sollicitous only of reducing their Fellow-Subjects to their former Afflictions. The whole Effect of this insolent Clamour concluded in an immoveable Persuasion of the ineffaceable 'Designs Defigns of those seditious Tongues in redoubled Acclamations of Praise, and Manifestations of Gratitude to their King; who, in Pity to their Woes, had graciously relieved them from the Cause thereof, and expanded Blessings like the Sun-Beams, giving Life and Vigour to the whole Creation. The new Code being complete, received the Approbation of the Senate, and the Soul of Amurath rejoiced beyond Expression, when he prenounced that Fiat which established its Existence. It was now the manifold Falsehoods asserted by the Demagogi were too visible to be longer concealed. It appeared that instead of infringing the plebeian Part (c)f the Tribunals, that savourite Object of the Legislature was improved, and rendered more beneficial to the Subjects; that the Powers of Fraud were almost.
