We find, from the account of Sir Henry Sydney's visit to Cork, that the Earl of Desmond was at large, and in high favor in 1575. He was brought from London to Dublin in 1573, where he was kept prisoner. It would seem as if his wife, the countess, had also been a prisoner, for we find them both, October 12, 1573, sueing for enlargement, and complaining shortly after, that they got neither favor nor liberty; they therefore resolved to liberate themselves. "It happened," we are told by the Four Masters, "through the miracles of God, and the intercession of James"--not James, the Apostle, but James Fitzmaurice, the great Irish rebel--that "the Earl of Desmond and his brother John, who had been prisoners in London for six years, were liberated. The earl was put under arrest in the town Dublin, and John was permitted to visit the fair plains of Munster." The earl, who appears to have been on a sort of parole, under the custody or care of the mayor of Dublin--but this sort of thing was not well understood in those days--took advantage of a hunting excursion to turn his horse's head to the South. He, and a few SIB WILLIAM DBURY IN COBK. 235 followers, travelled for three nights, and arrived unexpectedly in the midst of the Geraldines, November, 1573, who received him with wild cheering. In the course of one month he expelled the government forces from the chief towns of Munster, taking the castles Baile na Martra Castle Martyr, in Cork, and Castlemaine, in Kerry.
