In these essays, David Marr offers his personal take on the profound impact that Australia's churches are having on Australians' lives. He contends that churches, both Protestant and Catholic, are locked into a war against pleasure. This is the real inheritance of the country's convict past and a struggle that began when the first missionary came ashore with the first boatload of felons to confront the first bemused "savages". What he claims is most disturbing is that governments are listening to churches more than they once did. Their message is much the same, but government is now paying attention. The churches haven't changed but Australia, or at least Australian politics, has changed. He explores the strange crusades which are being conducted against sex on television, the war against porn, guerilla campaigns against homosexuals, harassment of AIDS and HIV prevention programmes, outbreaks of civil war in leading church private schools, persecution of the novels and plays kids study for the HSC examination and passionate collaboration between some churches and most governments for renewed efforts in the War on Drugs. Marr questions the price Australians are asked to pay in this life for admission into the next, especially when he is one of the many people with a solid conviction that this is the only life we are ever going to have.
