After a natural disaster has all but destroyed the Earth, the orphaned and "defective" Leora, while searching for her sister, defies the oppressive laws of the land and joins a band of rebels trying to overthrow the government. An intriguing fantasy that has as much to say about being different as it does about the joy of belonging, this selection of the Junior Library Guild pulls readers into this beautifully imagined world and Leora's quest to find her place in it.

"The Hermit Thrush Sings" is a sweet, creative book about young Leora, a social misfit in a post-disaster Earth. Mutations abound in this new world, many of them touted as poison-laden or evil. Leora herself is "mutated", with one hand that has webs conecting the fingers. But it is this hand that makes her special - it is her drawing hand, her mysterious connection with the strange world in which she lives. Through a captivating series of events, Leora goes in search of her long-lost sister, and encounters strange creatures, new friends, rebels, and adventures far beyond her wildest dreams. "The Hermit Thrush Sings" is a book I would highly recommend for those of us with vivid imaginations, a curiousity to big for our own good, and a desire for a "Happily Ever After".

this book is one of my all-time favorites
i absolutely love this book. it hits close to home with Leora trying to fit into a world where being different is bad. it has a powerful meaning and strong story, but is an easy read. each time i read it i get something new out of it. not only does it have a good story and moral, but it is imaginative and lively. i highly recommend this book to you and your children.
