Trade paperback (Japan). Glued binding. 634 p. Unusual book in its production. It is from the 3rd printing in Japan from 1959. " Printed in Japan by Mitsumura Printing Company, Tokyo. Tale of the wars, feuds, intrigues, scandals, and love affairs of the decadent Imperial Court of Kyoto, Japan in the twelfth century. It is a medieval epic on a heroic scale, full of splendor and pageantry. It was a time of corruption, of disintegration of the effete aristocracy, of brawling samurai. The author was born in 1892. With little more than a primary school education, he became by turns a day laborer, a dockside painter, a toolmaker, and a dozen other unrelated things until a Tokyo newspaper hired him as a reporter. After the 1923 great earthquake destroyed the newspaper office, he decided to become a writer. This book sold over 1 million copies.
