There are few cities whose history I should better like to write, not only on account of my admiration of that charming town, which, like a stately old dowager, is adorned as in its best days, exquisitely clean and coquettish; and which, notwithstanding its uncommon prosperity, has preserved the manners of its good old times and the monuments of its good old tastes; but also because few cities have had an existence so full of incident. The clash of arms has indeed resounded there but seldom, the glories of war hold but a moderate and secondary place in its annals, just enough to prove that it was capable of heroism when heroism was required; but the struggles of industry and of commerce, and their great results, form part of its daily history. MIDDELBURG. 233 The results of progress are to be traced in it from hour to hour; on its market-place, and in its exchange--the resort of all the trading peoples of Europe--business of such importance was transacted as to spread prosperity and plenty throughout the whole country. Middelburg is of very ancient origin. I will not trouble you with the almost fabulous birth that has been ascribed to the city. Its name, which means the ' City in the Midst, ' comes, as Guicciardini tells us, from the fact that it is situated almost in the centre of the island. A more complicated etymology and more pompous explanation has been given of this appellation.
