Seller's Description:
24cm, xxvi, 472p. with 3 plates & rear folding pocket map, limited to 550 copies, this being #85, original gilt crested red cloth, t.e.g., spine slightly sunned else a very good to fine copy. (wst) "The letters printed here are, with few exceptions, addressed to James Hargrave. They were written at posts from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Pacific coast, and from the southern limits of the Hudson's Bay Territory to the Arctic circle. They form what is probably a unique chronicle of the north and west in the days before newspapers. An attempt has been made to choose letters that throw light on the conditions of the country, the conduct of the trade, and the life of the traders. Since the letters are private, they reveal much that was necessarily omitted from official correspondence". Introduction.
