Dave King's book is populated by such characters who are faulted, human and most importantly- believable. The plot is elegant in tis simpliciity, much like its writing. Definitely a good curl-up-during-a-rainy-day book, King's Ha-ha reminds the reader that we are all connected.

We chose this for a book club read. From the description I was expecting more of a heart warming story. The tally in the bookclub was 3 strong 'dislikes' and 3 'it was just okays'. The people who disliked the book found the main character to be very unsympathetic and frustrating. The remainder were sympathetic to the main character(maybe because we are in the healthcare field) but just got a little turned off by the main character's need to self pleasure himself with descriptions of the process.--probably because we were women we just didn't feel we needed to read about it. This was most likely the biggest turn off for us (no pun intended). What I did like about this book was that it really made me think what it would be like if you couldn't communicate through speech or writing after being able to do both the first 18 years of your life. Would I recommend it to a friend? I don't know. I lent it to a guy I know and he gave it back without finishing it. Apparently they are making a movie of it so there must be some people out there who liked it. Of course they made a movie of "The Hours" too which I didn't quite understand so if you liked "The Hours" maybe you'll like this book.
