In a narrative that reads like a gripping detective story, Antonia Fraser explains why there should have ever been a plot at all and tries to understand why the courageous, idealistic, but terrifyingly misguided conspirators risked their lives for what they believed to be the cause of God and their country. With her customary insight and skill she deftly untangles the intricate relationship between religion and politics in the early seventeenth century. Above all, she brings the distant events surrounding that fateful night of 5th November 1605 to dramatic life in ways which have an eerie resemblance to our own.

Antonia Fraser always writes beautifully and has clearly researched this subject thoroughly, She weighs up the various theories about the 'Powder Treason' and comes to her own conclusions, notably about the Monteagle letter which betrayed the plot. What was new for me was the complex background of the appalling position of Catholics in England in the early 1600s and the divisions among them.
