A True Picturebook
My wife told me about this book when we first started dating. She told me that the Strawberry Snatcher was scary but the story was excellent. So I finally bought it for her for a Mother's Day gift. Since then our son has claimed the book as his own and the fit ensues if he does not get "read" Strawberry Snatcher on a nightly basis. This is the edition of the story without the words.
Molly Bang's artwork, though decidedly Southern in origin still draw upon the collective unconscious of the long-nosed snatcher archetype. The Strawberry Snatcher could be from any culture, Southern, Western, Norwegian, and so forth. He is the one who wants something that the Gray Lady, almost an every-person has: the strawberries.
Through chase and escape he persues his quarry, never really regarding the Gray Lady, just the strawberries she carries.
This story is sweet and scarry and cool all at the same time. Children of all ages will enjoy this book and find their own storytelling ability to see pictures without words.
