As far as worldwide acclaim is concerned, this novel is a bit of a sleeper. It has recently been reprinted as a paperback and is enjoying belated success - belated in spite of enthusiastic national reviews when it was published in 1965 and the author likened to J.D.Salinger, though Robertson's young protagonist is less cynical than Holden Caulfield. The book's plot is simple but deeply plumbs the mind of a nine-year-old boy whose observations of the people and institutions around him are evocative of any pre-adolescent's experience. He, his younger sister, and his grandmother make up the central cast with parents, teachers, friends, and a red wagon as back-up. One friend, recently moved across town, inspires him to make a momentous decision that helps him cross the bar between boyhood and manhood. The novel is set within an old Cleveland neighborhood (one which has today largely turned to dust) and within the context of an actual 1944 disaster, the East Ohio Gas Co. explosion. Though two follow-up novels trace the later childhood of Morris Bird III, this first part is by far the best of the lot. You may find yourself rereading parts of this novel for months or years. Highly, highly recommended.
