Otis Livingston Graham Jr. (1935-2017) was an American historian, with an interest in political history, immigration, and public history. Graham earned his Ph.D. in history at Columbia University in 1966 with a doctoral dissertation entitled The Old Progressive and the New Deal: A Study of the Modern Reform Tradition. He joined the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1966 and taught there until 1995. He then taught at the University of North Carolina, until 2002. This is Professor Graham's synthesis and re-intrepretation of the political and diplomatic developments of the years 1900-1928. Writings on this period are plentiful but contradictory. Dr. Graham's study clarified the mounting data and conflicting theories of this provocative and formative periods in American history. This work traces the reform impulse through the War mobilization and the post-war decade, and demonstrates the essential unity of the period. Neo-revisionist in its discussion of foreign policy, the book offers a critical account of American entry into World War I and discussions the effects of that war on reform. The book includes a fascinating picture section an a bibliographical essay that provides ample source material for interested readers.
