The Great Barrier Reef is one of thirteen volumes in the Time-Life book series The World's Wild Places. In this lavishly illustrated series of books, readers journey to distant and exotic places in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. This book is an overview of the many facets of the largest coral structure in the world. Topics covered include the formation of coral, ecology of the reef, fishes, sea turtles, plant life, invertebrates, and seabirds. The final chapter analyzes the challenges facing the Great Barrier Reef; these include the crown of thorns starfish (which eats coral), pollution, tourism, and the extraction of natural resources. As with other books in this series, numerous photographs supplement the narrative. A detailed map is included. Overall, I thought this book was a good overview of the plant and animal life of the Great Barrier Reef.
