Its action unfolds in 1916, the year of the Somme. As war destroys the countryside Phillip Maddison loves, turning it into an inferno of mud and terror, the damaged figure of the Mother of God with her Babe on a ruined church inspires the legend that war will end only when she, the Golden Virgin, topples into the ruins below. Invalided home once again Phillip re-crosses the narrow waters of the Channel to find life continuing as before, albeit with an ever-widening gulf between those at home and those who have 'returned.' 'Williamson's style is romantic, though rarely sentimental, and his sensuous response to nature is fresh and surprising.' Anthony Burgess, Ninety-Nine Novels: The Best in English since 1939

Seller's Description:
None. Near Fine in Very Good Indeed jacket. A lovely first edition of Henry William's sixth novel in his series following the life of Phillip Maddison, this novel seeing him during the First World War. The first edition of this work. In the original publisher's unclipped dustwrapper. This is the sixth novel in 'A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight', a series that follows the life of Phillip Maddison from the late 1890s to the early 1950s. The series totalled in fifteen volumes. 'The Golden Virgin' takes place during the First World War, following the young protagonist through the battle of Ypres and Loos. Written by Henry Williamson, an English novelist who won the Hawthornden Prize for literature in 1928 for 'Tarka the Otter'. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Dustwrapper is lightly age-toned with some edge wear, with a small tape repair to the head of the spine to the reverse. A few minor marks to the dustwrapper. Very small closed tear to the spine of the dustwrapper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Gathering for pages 425 to 440 is detached but present, though there is no evidence of the binding being broken or this gathering detaching from the text block, it appears as if it wasn't bound in to begin with and was missed by the publisher. Near Fine.
