Not illustrated. 1890 Excerpt: ...of the scales in the shortest time, practice, at first, very slowly, with studious attention to the following Golden Rules;--I. Aim at flexibility, in all joints of the fingers, arms and hands. Avoid everything that produces a feeling of constraint, straining or rigidity. Study plasticity, tact. II. The top of the hand must always be horizontal. Allow no sagging or drooping of the hand on the little finger's side of it; keep the hand-joints of the little-and ring fingers at the same height. Observe this carefully at the moment the thumb is passed under the fingers, or the fingers over the thumb. III. The wrist joint must be loose so as to work easily in a sidewise direction, but all rotatory motion of the wrist or twisting over the hand must be shunned; this is essential in order to obey rule II. IV. The thumb must be taught the habit of traveling under the hand so as to be ready to strike at the earliest moment, and must be done in this manner, viz: --In going up the scale with the right hand, or down with the left, the very instant any finger strikes its key, the thumb must be passed under it, and this movement must be gradually extended with each finger played, until the thumb is over the key it is to strike. This motion under the hand must be over the surface of the keys near to, but never touching, the tips of the fingers. In going down the scale in the right hand or up in the left, the thumb should take position over the key it is to strike next, at the very instant the finger passed over it has struck. This favors velocity. Moreover, while each finger is playing, the joints that connect it with the hand must be pliant, as well as the wrist free, so that the hand can be gradually moving onward, little by little, and the thumb passed under, or the finge...
