The Gift is the phantasmal autobiography of Fyodor Godunov-Cherdynstev, a writer living in the closed world of Russian intellectuals in Berlin shortly after the First World War. This gorgeous tapestry of literature and butterflies tells the story of Fyodor's pursuits as a writer. Its heroine is not Fyodor's elusive and beloved Zina, however, but Russian prose and poetry themselves.

Seller's Description:
None. Very Good Indeed in Very Good jacket. The first English edition of Vladimir Nabokov's final Russian novel surrounding the life of a fictional Russian author living in Berlin after fleeing the Bolshevik Revolution. The first English edition. Originally published in Russian in 1938, written between 1935 and 1937 while the author was living in Berlin. Â Written by expatriate Russian novelist and poet, Vladimir Nabokov, who was best known for his popular novel 'Lolita'. Translated from the original Russian by Michael Scammell, with collaboration from the author. 'The Gift' tells the story of protagonist Fyodor Godonuv-Cherdyntsev, a Russian emigre living in Berlin following the First World War. Nabokov presents the effects of life, memory, tradition and heritage on art. Bound in the publisher's original cloth, with the price-clipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with light bumping to the extremities. Light spotting to fore edge. Dust wrapper is very good, with light soiling and a little sunning to the spine. A little edge wear to the wrap, with tape reinforcing the reverse. Very Good Indeed.
This book is a gift indeed. His prose reads like poetry and as in most of his work, it is obvious that his heart is broken over the exile from his homeland. The details of a childhood in Russia and life in Berlin I found fascinating. Also, his love of butterflies and moths is interesting. I give this book 5 stars and it will always be in my library to read again and again.
