This is one of the best historical mysteries I've come across in a long time. The pace is fast and the characters are well endowed with both good and bad points. Libertus, as a former Celtic nobleman sold into slavery but now freed and a Roman citizen, is a mosaic artist. But he is still poor. When the opportunity comes to play sleuth with wealthy and aristocratic governor representative, Marcus Aurelius, Libertus can't resist.
The setting of Roman Britain reads as very authentic and real to life. This is the "glory of Rome" from the underside.
Cant' wait to read the rest of the series.
