The stories in this book ring so true to the chaotic and crazy atmosphere in occupied Naples that they take your breath away. My father was there in in the army in 1945, and his recollections are mirrored here. The author was truly an inspired genius when he wrote this; it is a tragedy that he never followed it up with another work of equal stature and became depressed and suicidal. It reminds me of Ernest Hemingway's best work; it should be required reading for most literature courses. It truly is a classic.
