Yet it is apparent that the commercial success of HDTV is crucially dependent on how it is received and taken up by the widely ranging economic interests involved in the production, transmission, and distribution of television, to say nothing of its appeal to television viewers. Awareness of this has led to the creation of the Working Group on the Economics of New Communication Technologies. This is one of the expert groups established by the European Television and Film Forum to devote increasing attention to the economic dimensions of HDTV in the past year. This study looks at the economic implications of introducing a High Definition Television (HDTV) service. Rather than look at all aspects of the commercial future of HDTV, the book concentrates on the factors and conditions which can make for the successful introduction of European standard HDTV as a broadcast medium to European households. There is, therefore, a focus on the role and motivations of broadcasters in relation to HDTV.
