Size: 8vo 8"-9" tall; Near Fine condition in hardcover, a First Edition copy, blue cloth, simple brown paper wraps, with previous owner's ink-stamp inside flaps, tape repair to interior. 168 pp., top-stained in turquoise, and with notes, index and bibliography. Some penciled notes and marginal, some duotone illustrations and photographs. "The Fremont Cannon" is Volume 11 in the Frontier Military Series. Duotone illustration of Fremont at frontis, another 15 or so throughout. Author attempts unravelling the John C. Fremont puzzle of the brass cannon transported over the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1844, how it was abandoned and lost, never recovered from the Sierra Nevada, being part history, part mystery, and part treasure hunter's guide. Bibliography and fold-out map. Some had it that the cannon was buried somewhere on the east slope of the Sierra Nevadas and never found or that the cannon was dug-up by Native Americans and dumped into one of the deep remote canyons found on the eastern slopes of the Sierras, according to Scott Burns.
