Excerpt: ...that they consider the treatment they get on such occasions anything but what it ought to be; but from what I hear in the market that is not astonishing, for when they attend these meetings there is nothing but recommendation of great land-owners to set labourers to work, manure, drain your lands; but they omit one principal feature--they never tell tenants how they can afford to pay for it. These meetings, which are a sample of those now occurring throughout the country, bear out my statement that the farmers are complaining of one thing, while the landlords are complaining of another. And this point is a most important one to the opponents of the present system. This it is that has induced my Hon. Friend the Member for Stockport to move for an inquiry, in order to prove that agriculture is suffering from the system itself; and that freedom and not restriction in this trade (as in every other) is essential to its success, which success can only be shown by the people's having a plentiful supply of food. But at this the Secretary at War, who was appointed to meet the complaints of all sides, and who seems to speak with the authority of one whose judgment is superior to that of other people, demurs. He tells us that the remedy for all this is not to talk about it; that, if his own friends will be quiet, they will not suffer; and that, if we on this side will be silent also, we shall see that we have no reason to complain. Which is all very convenient, no doubt, to those who have to answer for the suffering, but not very conclusive to those who suffer.
