The Forbidden territory, by Dennis Wheatley. This was not what I expected and really isn't my taste.
However, for one who does like this era and the "genteel" man who adores the ladies, this book is for you. The author is classically talented with a unique ability to stroke his words. He has earned his literary stature with his distinctive descriptive manner and crisp story weaving.
