The growth of palms and cedars may not be rapid, but the picture of strength, endurance and resilience cannot be missed or lightly gone over. As we gaze on the palm standing tall and straight, even after a terrific storm battered it, we are to be quick to recognize the comparison the Lord is making in this single verse. And when we pause and reflect the mighty cedar, a tree that was used to bolster the structure of God's Temple in Jerusalem, we have to take a long look at what our God is telling us in this key passage. The palm grows slowly, steadily, untouched by the many challenges and seasons that directly affect other trees. "The Flourishing Soul" focuses on the biblical fact that the righteous will flourish in all places. The palm does so in the valley, while the cedar thrives on the mountain. Both trees are evergreens, implying that the righteous will remain fruitful and useful even "in old age."
