Seller's Description:
Good. Book Ex lib. Unpaginated book of illustrations on one side with poem opposite, 48 ukiyo-e illustrations, 24 in color, small black designs, tall 8vo, pictorial cover. Cover spine, edges worn, slight waviness bottom of a few leaves, library stamp marked out top and bottom edges, but no other library marks, good; illustrations very good.
This small paperbound book provides a short but wide-ranging overview of some of the major genres of Japanese woodblock print art. Some images are printed in color and some in black and white. The selection is limited by the book's short length, and the size of the images by its modest dimensions, but those images do provide a good introduction to Japanese style and artistic conventions, and a look at the characteristics of various famous artists.
A much larger and more opulent --but still reasonably priced-- book on the subject is "Japanese Prints: Images From the Floating World," by Jane Messenger, which is still widely available.
