Art Bilek has resurrected that era and its atmosphere in The First Vice Lord, a meticulously detailed biography of Big Jim Colosimo, an often-overshadowed luminary in the who's who of Chicago's early criminals. Colosimo established and presided over the Levee's assortment of whorehouses, gambling joints, and low-life restaurants, with cooperation from crooked cops and machiavellian politicians, and despite vociferous, determined efforts of the religious community to shut his operation down, it prevailed, until Colosimo himself was shot down, in 1920, probably on the orders of Johnnie Torrio, his second-in-command eager to exploit the opportunities promised by Prohibition. The story of this lowly street-sweeper's rise to power, his romances and dirty dealings, combined with a slice of Chicago history, makes for a doubly revealing and entertaining read.
