Seller's Description:

Harcourt, Brace & Jovanovich, 1975; 465 pages. Appears to be a 1st edition, 2nd printing. Newly relevant again in the controversy over "fake news: " This is the story of war reporting, of war correspondents, and the legion of influences that can distort and obstruct efforts to report the truth. It tells of the war correspondent and his search for truth or his role as a propagandist for his, or another government. Covers wars from the Crimea through Vietnam. Philip Knightly puts together an exciting and informative history of the war correspondent. Stripping away the romanticism that such an occupation attracted, Knightly shows the grimmer side of covering wars, from having dispatches censored to being a willing collaborator in a conflict. He concentrates from the American Civil War to the Falkland Conflict. In it, Knightly snipes at Hemingway for not reporting during the Spanish Civil War but keeping material for his books while admiring Martha Gelhorn's coverage of the Vietnam war (which later got her expelled from the country).
