I first read this book many years ago, in my twenties. Forty years later I'm rereading my way through every one of Manning Coles' Tommy Hambledon books that I can get my hands on.
Why? Because of the witty writing (that's the Manning part), the incredible agility of Hambledon in extricating himself from unpleasant situations (that's Coles), and the fantastic plots (both Manning and Coles both, I think).
As well, these tales offer insight into another time. In some ways, people back then were so like us--they had telephones and newspapers, they went to the office in cars, they had an organized police force and government. Yet in other ways, they seem so different, with their insistence on ethical behavior and civilized ideas as to what is done, and "not done."
I'm not giving plot details about this book because it wouldn't be fair. Read it! Just read it!
