The "materials" speedily arrived, in the shape of another letter from Briihl stating that the Saxon Ambassador at Vienna had had an audience of Maria Theresa, that the Empress had absolutely declined even to consider the terms proposed, and had expressed her opinion that the brothers d'Argenson were insuperable obstacles to any accommodation between France and Austria. After an unsuccessful attempt to induce d'Argenson to recede from the position which he had taken up, the marshal fired his petard, by handing Briihl's letter to Louis XV.; and on January io, the Minister who, either by his virtues or his faults, had been unfortunate enough to incur at the same time the resentments of the Courts of Madrid,1 Dresden, and Vienna, of Maurice de Saxe, the Marshal de Noailles, Madame de Pompadour, and the brothers Paris, received his dismissal. 1 The Court of Madrid was incensed against d'Argenson by his refusal to countenance the proposed marriage between the Dauphin and his deceased wife's younger sister, the Infanta Anlonia, but its resentment had been purposely exaggerated by the Marechal de Noailles, the late French Ambassador in Spain. Thus did the vanity and ambition of Richelieu contribute to the fall of the most able and upright statesman whom France possessed from the death of Fleury to the rise of Turgot, and pave the way for the "lame peace" of Aix-la-Chapelle, and for that fatal alliance with Austria which involved France in the disasters of the Seven Years' War.
