Adrian Goldsworthy knows his Roman history inside out. In this history about who were to rule the Mediterranean for centuries he fascinates us with Hannibal as the leader of the Barca family of Carthage against Rome's initial amateur generals. From the first chapter, describing the opposing sides, to the latest chapter of Rome's legacy to destroy Carthage, this should be the best presentation of the Punic Wars, and well suited for any reader with some interst in history and for Roman democracy. The latter is perhaps become a main person in Scipio Acricanus, defeating Hannibal at "The Battle of Zama".
Military leaders have always been interested in "The Battle of Cannae", or only "Cannae August 216 BC". In this for Hannibal victorious battle and his special arrangments of his forces, the author interestingly states that we do not know whether Hannibal had given his commanders prior instructions or whether he sent them couriers to rearrange when necessary.
Goldsworthy has many similar statements, including "what if - what if not?", parallells to later major conflicts, etc. This contributes to make "The Punic Wars" a living story. And not least, we become familiar with Hannibal and his brother and brother-in-law and with Scipio.
