Draws from a wide variety of sources, including the Bible, Shakespeare, and other works of literature. Drawing from a wide variety of sources this book details the meaning of the cliché or expression, its source, early uses, and the history of the phrase over time and its level of use in contemporary English is also noted. --REVIEW: "This dictionary spans allusions of the past 1000 years, including more than 1500 terms, names, and words used as metaphors to crystallize moments within the larger context of history, culture, and literature. Updating and expanding The Facts On File Dictionary of 20th-Century Allusions, this work joins broader references like Dorothy Auchter's Dictionary of Historical Allusions and Eponyms (LJ 8/98) and Elizabeth Webber and Mike Feinsilber's Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Allusions (1999). Over 600 new entries from earlier time periods have been added, although the selection appears random. There is an entry for Sinclair Lewis's Main Street but not William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury or the "sound and fury" of Shakespeare's MacBeth; Batman, Bernhard Goetz, and Littleton, CO, are listed but not Waterloo, Charles Manson, or the Simpsons. Typically, Merriam-Webster's includes each entry's pronunciation, meaning, and multiple examples of usage. Facts On File contains nearly twice as many entries but offers no pronunciation guide, sometimes omits historical or cultural insights, and seldom quotes usage examples. Whereas both dictionaries describe Ahab within the context of Moby Dick, Facts On File omits mention of the historic and biblical context of King Ahab, an archetype of evil, from the Old Testament. Finally, some entries appear too rudimentary to include, such as "ABCs as easy as ABC." Nevertheless, this new work is recommended as a sound reference tool holding many allusions not yet covered elsewhere. --Michelle Foyt, Russell Lib., Middletown, CT-Library Journal--with a bonus offer--
