The Everglades is one of twenty-seven volumes in the Time-Life book series The American Wilderness. In this lavishly illustrated series of books, readers journey to the wilderness areas of North America. This volume presents the low, watery wilderness of southern Florida.
Author Archie Carr (1909-1987) has done a wonderful job of describing the plants, animals, geology, and ecology of southern Florida. Alligators, crocodiles, manatees, snakes, and numerous species of birds and fishes are some of the animals featured in this book. Royal palms, bald cypress trees, saw grass, and mangroves are some of the plants featured as well. In fact, an entire chapter and photographic essay are devoted to the mangroves. While the book is mainly about the Everglades, we also learn about the Kissimmee River, Lake Okeechobee, Big Cypress Swamp, Corkscrew Swamp, the Fahkahatchee Strand, and the Florida Keys. The book concludes with a description of how southern Florida is being besieged by development, invasive species, and the draining of water from the River of Grass. A bibliography, maps, and an index are included. In conclusion, The Everglades is a great book about one of the many unique places that can be found in the American wilderness.
