Quintas Livius, a Roman tax clerk, finds himself a hunted man after filing an investigative report on a rash of disturbances in Galilee surrounding a supposed miracle worker named Jesus. In the wake of Jesus's crucifixion, the authorities in Jerusalem must squelch a brewing rebellion over what has come to be seen as a rushed execution of a genuine prophet. Because of his report, which had been submitted prior to Jesus's trial, Quin becomes a prime object of that post-crucifixion cover-up. During his investigation, Quin had unknowingly become entangled in an anti-Jesus conspiracy--an entanglement severed only after Quin got thrown together with a group of Jesus followers and an itinerant merchant trying to make money off those followers. Among the people Quin meets are a man who worked at a wedding feast in Cana and a young girl who carries a rope she said was used to lower a man through a roof to be healed by Jesus. The report Quin eventually submits will subject him to the wrath of a ruling establishment seeking to eliminate any evidence that it might have known the truth of Jesus before condemning him. But as he flees for his safety, Quin encounters the risen Jesus and learns the truth behind all the strange circumstances he investigated.

ââ?¬Å"The Encounters of Quintas Liviusââ?¬Â? is the story of ââ?¬Å"an inconsequential civil servant of the Roman Empire.ââ?¬Â? Quintas, who refers to himself as Quin, is a young, orphaned Roman living in Israel during Jesusââ?¬â?¢s rise to prominence, and subsequent crucifixion. Quinââ?¬â?¢s father had been an unhappy Roman official who was killed while under a cloud of scandal. His mother died of sickness, while blaming Quin on her deathbed for his fatherââ?¬â?¢s downfall. Stuck in Jerusalem with no family, the Romanââ?¬â?¢s used young Quin as a poorly paid, low status messenger.
He is sent to Galilee to investigate a case where a farmer is refusing to pay taxes on his herd of swine. The farmer tells Quin that his pigs committed mass suicide by jumping over a cliff into the Sea of Galilee, so therefore his loss should cancel his tax debt. Then he meets a man who tells him about the two men infected with demons who Jesus saved by sending the demons into the pigs (Matthew 8:28).
He meets a wealthy young scion of a famous Pharisee, Asa, who befriends him, and brings him to a high-class inn. There, he becomes involved with those Jews who find Jesus troublesome and dangerous. Asa is very charismatic and friendly, and both he and Quin become close friends. (These scenes are brilliantly depicted by the author, especially how Asa is portrayed.)
But Quin goes off on his own to explore for himself. With another young man who he meets on the road, he sells loaves of bread to the crowds near the Sermon on the Mount. Then later he witnesses an anti-Jesus mob kill Roman soldiers near the tomb of Jairus daughter, who Jesus had raised from death (Mark 5: 21).
He receives an urgent message from his Roman superiors asking him to immediately report on the political implications of the situation. When he reports that Jesus and his followers seem kind and gentle, and unlikely to foment rebellion, Quin suddenly finds himself in danger.
As a former Christian, now predisposed to skepticism regarding the Gospels, I found this short novel to be a highly readable, unsentimental story that does not pander or appeal to religious emotionalism. I am thinking of the many movies from the fifties, such as Ben Hur, The Robe, or Sign of the Cross where welling music and camera shots rising to the heavens show Roman Gentiles teeming with Christian passion. This novel is nothing like that, but yet is a profoundly convincing story of one young mans journey to follow Jesus. Some parts of the book rise to the level of extraordinary literary quality. It is a fine example of Christian literature.
