I bought this book because the description of it sounded pretty good. I did not realize that it was written entirely in first person and only from the heroine's point of view. Because of this, I wasn't really able to connect with the hero and I felt at times that I really didn't know him at all. Basically, the heroine is the daughter of an Earl who has a serious addiction to gambling. Because of this, they are really hurting for money. So,the Earl arranges for his daughter to marry an aquaintance of his who is the hero of the story. The hero is NOT an aristocrat, but is a businessman. The heroine is furious at this arrangement since he is only a businessman and therefore a second-class citizen as far as she is concerned. Also, she is in love with someone else. But she knows she doesn't have a choice since the money her husband to be will give in exchange for the marriage will help her father with some of his gambling debts. So they get married, but she still treats her husband like he is beneath her and spends all of her time with her rich friends, including the guy she was in love with. Well, a big misunderstanding happens and her husband's patience finally wears out. They end up seperating and he starts the proceedings to divorce her. It is only then that she wakes up and realizes what her selfishness has done. She then goes about to try and persuade her husband to give her another chance and hopes that she is not too late. And now for my take. Like I mentioned, the book is entirely first person, which I am not a fan of. Also, I couldn't stand the heroine for a good portion of the book since she WAS so self-centered. I wouldn't have been able to put up with her for as long as the hero did. From what I was able to tell about the hero, he seemed to be a pretty nice guy, and I was able to read that he grew up with nothing and fought his way up to the top to become a successful businessman. But that was all I could really get out of him. I couldn't tell what he was thinking or feeling or why he put up with the heroine's antics for as long as he did. Maybe it was because he loved her; if that was the case, I would have liked to know when he fell in love with her. Overall though, I would probably read another book by this author. In spite of all my misgivings of this particular novel, I thought that she wrote it pretty well. I would probably recommend it to a friend, but would tell him or her first about it being in first person.
