It was not inevitable that the petrol engined automobile was going to become the dominant force in world transportation in the last years of the 19th century. A number of factors contibuted to its success including having to compete against other vehicle prime mover systems including electric cars.
Today electric powered vehicles could be mounting a comeback as a result of improvements to battery technology - (or are they?). David Kirsch's 1999 history of the electric vehicle examines the context of the earlier petrol/electric competiton - it provides valuable incites into today's debate. The recent Brighton to London run for electric cars organised bt the RAC will push this issue back into the public domain. The book enables me to build on my basic understanding.
