Harbour.--When Henry II. granted the first charter, he also gave permission to levy dues for building a new harbour of timber and stone. From Leith to Hull there is not a single harbour of refuge; the ports are all tidal, and at North Shields a formidable bar is a terror to all ships entering in a gale of wind. Scarborough was made a warehousing port in 1840. The present harbour is protected by two stone piers: the New Pier, from West Sandgate southwards, designed by Smeaton, is 60 feet broad at the foundation, and where it is bowed 63 ft., and is 40 feet high. The great new pier was erected after 1763, and the inner west pier subsequent to 1817. In former times men used to angle from the Staiths. In 1816 remains of a very ancient pier were seen, and some mooring posts found in some of the cellars, of Quay St. The Floating Dock was opened in 1850. It was hither Robin Hood repaired, weary of Sherwood glades, and satiated with venison and forest craft, singing--"The fishermen brave more money have Than any merchants two or three, Therefore I will to Scarborough go, That I a fisherman brave may be."
