Seller's Description:
Fine in fine jacket. First printing. Fine, fresh, unread copy in equally fine dust jacket. Hardcover. x+213 pp. with bibliography, index. Beautifully illustrated with black and white and color photographs and reproductions. The daguerreotype, invented in France in 1839, was by the early 1850s improved by various methods in America to such a degree that it was often referred to as "the American process". In this generaously illustrated history, the author examines how a product of science and innovative technology resulted in a visual object. The work maps the evolution of the daguerreotype, as medium and as profession, from its introduction to the ascendency of "the American process", tracing its relationship to other fields and the professionalization of those fields. It recounst the activities of a series of American daguerreotypists, including fine artists, scientists and mechanical tinkerers.
